Dist. 62 Board OKs Junior High's Switch to Middle School

The Des Plaines Elementary District 62 board approved converting Algonquin Junior High School to a middle school over objections from one member, who focused on its use of educational television.
In a 4-1 vote, with two board members absent and member Arnold Agnos dissenting, the panel Monday approved conversion of the school at 767 Algonquin Road.
The conversion, set to occur in the 1997-98 school year, will include adding sixth grade to the school, which this past year had an enrollment of 390 students in seventh and eighth grades.
With the addition, Algonquin's enrollment could swell to about 700 students, officials have said.
The change will include the addition of educational innovations as smaller reading classes and "mini-courses" on subjects such as drama and career exploration, which students can take during study hall periods.
But some board members raised concerns about plans to include Channel One educational television programming at Algonquin this coming school year. …
