Library Works to Keep Pantry Shelves Stocked

Most area residents know that feeding one's family is a year-round project.
But many forget that when they make donations to area food pantries, says Thelma Talamantes, director of Meadows Community Services in Rolling Meadows.
That's why she's thankful Rolling Meadows Library officials are sponsoring a community food drive to help re-stock the local food pantry's shelves. Through May 31, anyone who visits the library at 3110 Martin Lane can drop off non-perishable donations.
"During Thanksgiving and Christmas, people are very generous," Talamantes said. "But after that, the food donations seem to slow down, and that's when we have the most need."
Located in Meadows Baptist Church, staff members at Meadows Community Services help feed an average of 200 people per month.
While some of them come from neighboring communities, most live in the East Park Apartments complex located in southwest Rolling Meadows.
And many of them work in factory or landscaping jobs from which they are laid off in the winter and early spring, Talamantes said. …
