Lieutenant Wants to Make a Difference

Ed Kopman has been a Carol Stream police officer for nearly 24 years.
He got into the business because he wanted to make a difference in the lives of people.
"I wanted to deal with a lot of people," Kopman said. "I wanted to see a lot of different things that happen in our society and be able to have some effect."
But Kopman, 46, said he often wonders just how much effect he and other police officers have.
"Sometimes you wonder," Kopman said. "It's like putting a Band-aid on a massive wound."
What is discouraging is seeing the same people getting into trouble time and time again, Kopman said.
"We just don't see a change in behavior in the people we deal with," Kopman said. "Even if we send them to prison in two or three years we see them again."
During his time at the Carol Stream Police Department, Kopman has served as the department's field training coordinator, as a chemical agent specialist and on the emergency procedures team. …
