Villa Park Library Employees to Get Competitive Pay Raises

Villa Park library trustees, concerned that higher-paying jobs at other libraries will lure away employees, said they support increasing salaries this year.
The only question left to consider is how much.
Before a special library board meeting Saturday, library director Ted Balcom told trustees the library's salaries and wages are not competitive with those offered in surrounding communities.
Balcom said a beginning reference librarian, a position that requires a master's degree, earns $10 an hour in Villa Park. The same position pays $14 or $15 an hour in nearby towns, he said.
"Typically, when we go to recruit someone, we get people who say: 'I would like to consider working for you ... but the pay is terrible,' " Balcom said.
Trustees responded to Balcom's comments by saying they support a salary increase that would take effect May 1.
"We've known about this for a long time," Trustee Pat Hubbard said. "We just never realized there was such a discrepancy."
Although trustees gave verbal support, a formal vote on the matter has not yet been taken. …
