Financial Resources for Municipal Leaders
County and State Resources
A number of resources are available at the county and state level to help protect children and strengthen families. In some cases, counties and states fund child protection grants for which cities or community organizations can apply. In addition, municipal leaders can explore the federal resources that are listed below by contacting the lead child protection agency in their state.
The primary sources of federal funding for the prevention of child abuse and neglect are administered by the Administration for Children and Families in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Municipal leaders can contact the Children's Bureau for more information about these federal resources by calling (202) 205-8618. These programs include:
* Promoting Safe and Stable Families Program -- These grants provide funds to state child welfare agencies to support family preservation and community-based services to families. Working with the state agency, municipal leaders can help ensure that these services involve local governments, community organizations, and residents.
See www.acf.dhhs. gov/programs/cb/programs/fpfs.htm
* Community-Based Family Resource and Support Grants -- States are granted formula funds to expand networks of community-based family resource support services. Lead agencies identify their state's needs and provide direct funding to local agencies with community-based child abuse and neglect prevention programs. Municipal leaders can contact the CBFRS lead agency in their state for more information.
