AN aggressive assault on the European market has been signalled by John Deere.

The aim was to double the company's business in Western Europe by 2005, Clay T Sherrill, general manager of John Deere's branch in the United Kingdom and Ireland, told a Press conference in Seville, Spain.

The company hoped to achieve a significant growth in market share "by delivering technology that pays," he said.

"In Europe, we are renewing product lines, widening and deepening product lines and taking John Deere into new growth areas.

"By 2003, 95 per cent of products will be less than three years old."

The largest ever product reveal in the company's history saw almost 4,000 dealers and journalists travel to Seville in Spain over the last four weeks.

During his Press conference, Mr Sherrill stressed the importance of marketing power.

"Committed dealers are vital. We are going to increase dealer capacity, which is critical to the whole strategy," he said.

"John Deere wants every one of its dealers to be world class. For some dealerships that will be a challenge, but we intend to increase the level of efficiency of dealers."

The company also aimed to increased its used equipment and parts business.

"Parts is a very profitable area of business, worth US$6 billion in Europe. It is crucial business for dealers. We aim to expand our parts business - and not just own brand equipment."

Mr Sherrill said that financing was an issue for all machinery manufacturers. "The is why we are expanding JD Credit. Indeed, we have set up our own bank in Luxembourg."

Paul Enz, John Deere's vice-president for marketing in Western Europe, said that all of the company's dealers needed to come up to the same level.

"We will work with our dealers to achieve this."

He said that the company needed 1,000 new dealers in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Round balers

FIVE new round balers for the 2002 season, including a brand new, smaller fixed chamber model, are being introduced by John Deere.

Featuring new Hi-Flo pickups, precutter knife control, advanced monitoring systems and CoverEdge net wrap, John Deere's latest 500 Series variable chamber round balers are designed for reliable, productive operation in all crops and conditions.

Bale width is 1.17m on all three models, and bale diameter is from 0.6m to 1.3m on the 572, 1.55m on the 582 and 1.8m on the 592. Minimum tractor horsepower requirements at the pto are 45hp, 55hp or 60hp respectively.

In addition to the standard, 1.81m and 2m precutter pickups, the 582 and 592 balers can be fitted with the new 2m and 2.2m Hi-Flo precutter pickup, designed for better bale starting and crop feeding in the biggest windrows. Precutter models are suitable for making high density straw or silage bales which can be easily broken for feeding or bedding.

Aggressive feeding forks mounted on the heavy duty crankshaft and two large diameter converging augers move material smoothly towards the feeding system. As it enters, pairs of rotating fingers draw the crop against 14 individually spring-loaded knives, spaced at 7cm. A hydraulically-actuated mechanical reverser can be operated from the tractor cab, using the baler control monitor.

Diamond tread forming belts grip the crop as it enters the bale chamber, and roll it into a tight, dense core, while dual cylinders keep pressure on the belts throughout the formation and wrapping cycles. Bale density is hydraulically controlled and easily adjusted, and a soft core option is available which is adjustable from the tractor cab.

There is a choice of BaleTrak and BaleTrak Plus electronic control monitors for standard and precutter models respectively, which are easy to use and allow the tractor driver to focus on the windrow in front rather than the baler behind. Featuring five crop presets, these provide complete control of the baler without having to leave the cab. …
