New Chapter in Technology and Services for Libraries; INVESTMENT

MEASURES to improve the quality of the services offered by libraries and to equip them with modern technology have been introduced in Wales.
This includes bringing all libraries online by the end of next year and addressing for the first time the provision of Welsh-language materials.
Launching tandards for Public Libraries in Wales, Culture Minister Jenny Randerson said the overall aim was to improve the quality of the country's library services.
The standards have been the subject of wide consultation and all respondents have welcomed the intention to publish standards for public library services in Wales.
"By introducing standards we are establishing a framework which will encourage and facilitate improvements in service, " said Mrs Randerson.
The new library standards will come into effect on April 1 next year and library authorities will need to achieve the standards over a threeyear period.
The standards include:
The location of libraries enabling convenient access to users and opening hours which meet users' needs;
The development of new information and communication technology systems;
Satisfactory services for issuing and reserving books, and Providing choice in books and materials and addressing for the first time the provision of Welsh-language materials. …
