Collins Hones in on Reading, Comprehension Skills

Principal Laura Campbell wants her students at Collins School to find out what goes on in the mind of a good reader.
So, she and her staff are "unveiling the secrets of reading" to all 560 students at the Schaumburg school through its "Reading Strategy of the Month" program, which was launched last year.
Each month of the school year, teachers emphasize one strategy to push these grade-schoolers to read at or above grade level.
In September, for instance, it was connections.
Students were encouraged to find connections in themselves, other books or to the outside world as they read everything from textbooks to science fiction.
This month, students will tap their imagination to create pictures in their mind while reading.
As the school year progresses, the goal is for students to develop more critical thinking skills.
The premium is placed on not just "better readers, but better comprehenders," Campbell said.
Teachers in the following months will prod these youngsters with questions before, during and after they read. …
