Food Products Exports Get Boost

With the uncertainty of the electronics sector, the Department of Trade and Industry is pinning its hope on the exports of agricultural products as it projects exports of fresh and processed foods to reach $1.25 billion in 2004 from last year's estimated exports of $873.6 million from this sector.
A business plan for food products by the DTI based the exports target on the country's favorable climate for agricultural products and proximity to exports market such as Japan and America.
The DTI also noted the strong government support for the improvement of agricultural produce via the Agro-Fishery Modernization Act.
Availability of production technology, wide range of fresh and processed products and superiority of fresh produce were cited as among the Philippine advantages in the exports of fresh and processed foods.
Of the $1.25 billion exports target from this sector, the fresh food is expected to contribute $560. …
