Greens Claim Government Ignores Renewable Energy; ANALYSIS: Campaigners Attack Nuclear Policy

THE nuclear industry is still getting the bulk of UK Government spending on energy research and development while renewable energy is starved of funds, Friends of the Earth claimed yesterday.
The environmental campaign group warned that unless funding policy radically changed then the Prime Minister's vision of Britain being "a leading player" in the "coming green industrial revolution" would be little more than hot air.
The spending analysis is published as the Cabinet Office review of energy policy is expected shortly.
Friends of the Earth said the analysis shows that in 2000:
58pc of government energy research and development went to nuclear power;
Only 23pc was spent on renewable energy, while over the last 25 years nuclear power has received more than three-quarters of available funds;
Britain spent less in total on renewable research and development than Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, the USA, Germany and Japan;
Renewable research and development per head is over ten times greater in Denmark and Switzerland than it is in Britain. …
