Plant Protection on the Agenda

JOE Walsh, the Irish Minister for Agriculture Food and Rural Development, has outlined the role of his Department in organising the Food Safety Promotion Board (FSPB) symposium on Plant Protection and Food Safety, which took place over two days in Ballymascanlon, Co Louth.
He said the symposium was the first FSPB event organised by the Department and had been convened to promote North-South co-operation in relation to food safety.
It was the first formal meeting between staff of the DAFRD and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Northern Ireland (DARDNI), in relation to plant protection and food safety.
The Minister added that the symposium coincided with the 100th meeting of the Scientific Evaluation Committee of the Pesticide Control Service (PCS) of his Department; a committee that undertakes the peer review of evaluations of plant protection products. This committee then makes recommendations with respect to the authorisation of plant protection products.
The symposium programme consists of seven presentations, followed by a general discussion session on matters of common concern from a North- South perspective. …
