Geneva Skate Park Plan Worries Baseball Parents

A proposal to build a skate park on South Street has parents of Geneva baseball players wondering if the park will push them away.
Aldermen at a committee of the whole meeting Monday considered a draft agreement to let the park district use vacant land next to the public works facility at 1800 South St. for a skate park. That raised new concerns that aldermen say they'll have to research.
"I would hate to see this issue become a we-and-they issue," said Alderman Paul DesCoteaux. "I don't think there's a need for it."
Parents and coaches who use the adjacent baseball and soccer fields said the skate park would take up parking that already is in short supply, eliminate the only vacant ground where teams can warm up and create a distraction for young players.
"I think we need a skate park in Geneva," said Bob Sherwood, a six-year coach with the Geneva Baseball Association. "I just think that is not the location."
Park district representatives said that's the only viable location, though.
Teens and parents who have worked to create the park for the past three years came up with four possible locations. …
