Hoffman Estates Recruiting Women, Minorities for Jobs

Hoffman Estates officials hope this is the year they'll finally get a woman on their fire department.
In the next two to three weeks, the village's fourth and final fire station will be updated to accommodate women personnel, though there are no women firefighters in the 91-member department.
The village's fire and police chief on Monday gave the village board a sneak peak at the tweaked recruiting tools it will use starting this year to attract more qualified candidates, specifically ethnic minorities and women.
"It's important to have a department that's made up in demographics as similar to the community," said Police Chief Clint Herdegen.
Roughly 10 percent of the 97 sworn officers in the police department are women and just under 10 percent are minorities. Meanwhile, there are no female firefighters and less than 5 percent of the department is made up of minorities, officials said.
Fire Chief James Eaves said the fire department will soon finish female accommodations at its last fire station, number 23 on the village's north side. In addition to physical upgrades, both departments have revamped their recruitment processes, which will be apparent starting this year. …
