Naperville to Seek Opinions on Building Fancier Main St. Bridge

Naperville council members like the idea of an attractive Main Street bridge, but they're not ready to spend a lot of money on it.
The council agreed Tuesday to let staff members gather comments on a more elaborate bridge from downtown merchants and other groups interested in the downtown.
The city plans to build a new Main Street bridge over the DuPage River in 2003. Naperville engineers had planned to follow a design similar to the Eagle Street bridge, until a committee working on downtown improvements suggested it deserved more.
"It is a landmark. It should be treated as something special," said Mary Lou Wehrli, a member of the downtown plan implementation committee.
City engineers have estimated decorative lights, railings and other aesthetic improvements could cost the city an extra $450,000 to $650,000. While federal grants will pay about 80 percent of the overall cost of the new bridge, they likely wouldn't apply to purely decorative elements. …
