Local Colleges Nat?l Confab Set in Makati.(Main News)
The Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU) will hold its first national conference on May 23-26 at the Pamantasan ng Makati with Makati City Mayor Jejomar C. Binay as host, Dr. Benjamin G. Tayabas, ALCU president, announced yesterday.
The ALCU is an organization of locally-supported and communityoriented public colleges and universities whose charter members are the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, City College of Manila, Pamantasan ng Makati, Caloocan City Polytechnic College, Malabon Community College, Navotas Polytechnic College, Muntinlupa Polytechnic College, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay, and Valenzuela (Bulacan) Polytechnic College. Since 1996, ALCU's membership has grown to include local schools outside of Metro Manila.
The conference has for its general theme "The Role of LCUs in Localizing Quality Higher Education." Its sub-themes are: "LCU: A New Phenomenon in Quality Higher Education" and "The Role of LCUs in Bringing Quality Higher Education to Where It Matters Most."
The resource speakers and their topics include Sen. Manuel A. Villar, Sen. Edgardo J. Angara, "Legislative Agenda in Supporting LCUs;" Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman Dr. Ester A. Garcia, "ALCU and CHED: Partners in Localizing Quality Higher Education;" Interior and Local Government Secretary Jose D. Lina, "The Role of Local Chief Executives in the Management of the Affairs of LCUs."
Prof. Tomas Lopez, Jr. of AIM and Pamantasan ng Makati, "Alternative Stragegiesin Localizing Quality Higher Education;" Rep. Federico S. Sandoval of Navotas, "The Role of Congress in Mobilizing Resources for LCUs;" Gov. Rodolfo B. del Rosario, president of the League of Governors, "The Role of Governors in Supporting LCUs."
Binalonan, Pangasinan Mayor Ramon M. Guico, Jr., president of the League of Municipalities, "Scope of Authorities of Local Chief Executives vis-a-vis LCUs," and Makati City Councilor Salvador Pangilinan, president of the Philippine Councilors League, "Role of Local Council in Supporting LCUs."
