Learning the Write Stuff Volunteers Teach Fine Art of Calligraphy

Students in Jeanette Saltzberg's fourth-grade class at Prairie Elementary School in Buffalo Grove have been studying the unique art form of calligraphy.
While many engaged couple hire calligraphers to write addresses on their wedding invitations, fewer people take time to explore forms of calligraphy and how it can be used in artistic expression.
That's why Saltzberg appreciates the time that some members from the Chicago Calligraphy Collective, a guild of 300 artists, have spent with students in her classroom.
Throughout the school year, guild member and Prairie parent Sharon Borstein has given calligraphy lessons to the 20 students in Saltzberg's class.
Borstein first volunteered to teach students last year when her son, Sam, was in the fourth grade. Her willingness to volunteer again this year was an added benefit, Saltzberg said.
"Having Sharon with us really took us to another dimension."
While some students show more of an interest in calligraphy than others, all pupils are exposed to the basics of the art. …
