North's Harris Honored

North Eugene's Amy Harris has been selected as the Gatorade Oregon high school softball player of the year.
Harris finished with a 14-1 record this season with four perfect games, 222 strikeouts in 109 innings and a 0.64 earned-run average. She has signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Oregon.
Gatorade and Scholastic Coach & Athletic Trainer magazine select players of the year from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. All those players are eligible for the national player of the year honor.
The award also takes into account academic achievement. Harris maintains a 3.9 grade-point average.
Eight players from the Midwestern League have been selected to play in this weekend's 4A High School Senior All-Star Softball Series at Erv Lind Stadium in Portland.
Springfield's April Drews, Anna McLennan, Kelsea Schoenberg, Brieanne Thurn and Cierra Mann, North Eugene's Kelly Mannion and Amy Harris and Willamette's Rachael Spargo were selected for the State team. Mike Jodoin of North Eugene will coach the squad.
The State team will face the Metro team at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, following the state championship game, and on Sunday at 10 a.m. and noon.
Chris Rodgers of Wilson High in Portland will be one of 35 high school basketball standouts competing in the 2002 USA Basketball Junior National team trials beginning today in Colorado Springs, Colo., with Oregon's Ernie Kent serving as head coach and UO assistant Scott Duncan as one of the practice coaches.
The three-day tryout is the first stage leading to the selection of a 12-man team that will compete July 24-28 at the Junior World Championships qualifying tournament in Venezuela, where finalists for the 2003 Junior World Championships in Malaysia will be determined.
The trials include 16 players who recently completed their senior high school season, 17 who concluded their junior season and two who just completed their sophomore seasons. Of the 16 seniors, Hassan Adams of Los Angeles, Andre Iguodala of Springfield, Ill., and Rodgers have signed with Arizona, and Marquise Kately of San Francisco has signed with California.
Other Northwest players invited to the tryouts are Ryan Appleby of Stanwood, Wash. …
