Supreme Court Justice Santiago M. Kapunan Retires today.(Opinion &Amp; Editorial)
ASSOCIATE Justice Santiago M. Kapunan will be retiring from the Supreme Court today. His legal career saw its beginnings in private law firms in Roxas City and Manila. He joined the De Joya Law Offices and the Beldia Law Offices as Assistant Attorney soon after earning his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the Philippines in 1956.
Justice Kapunan afterwards joined government service. From Legal Officer of the Bureau of Internal Revenue from 1958 to 1962, he served as Solicitor (1962 to 1973) and Assistant Solicitor General (1973 to 1980) in the office of the Solicitor General. He was, at a time, acting concurrently as Commissioner of Land Registration.
He joined the Court of Appeals as an Associate Justice on June 20, 1980. He took the post of Acting Presiding Justice from August 10, 1992 to December 1, 1993, and served as Presiding Justice from September 7, 1993 to January 10, 1994. He was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on January 11, 1994. …
