Finding the Right Job. (Personal Futues)


To properly evaluate a prospective job--and the life changes that may go along with it--candidates should develop a strategy to obtain all their desired information during the limited time of interviews, according to business consultant Gordon Bing in his new book, Selecting Your Employer.

Bing recommends that you first construct an ideal job scenario, though one that is at least somewhat grounded in realistic goals. The scenario might include favorable job location, opportunities for promotion, interesting work, and more.

"Constructing your ideal enables you to identify the elements of importance and those that are secondary or insignificant," writes Bing. "But don't hesitate to modify your description as new information emerges or as actual conditions force compromises. You do not want to be burdened with impossible standards or objectives."

With this gold standard in mind, an interviewee can ask targeted questions to determine whether a position meets any criteria of the "ideal job."

Learning details about a potential employer is another key to improving the odds of a wise career decision. Bing advises applicants to ask about companies' policies in employee relations and their status relative to technology in products and services. …
