BRIONY IN HIGH COURT ACTION; Suspended Surgeon Sues Hospital for Breach of Contract

SUSPENDED surgeon Briony Ackroyd is taking High Court action against Walsgrave Hospital.
The consultant, who has been off work for more than two years, is claiming breach of contract against the trust which runs the Coventry hospital.
The breast surgeon, who has been suspended on full pay since February 2000, has lodged a claim with London's High Court.
The claim, which centres around the hospital's refusal to reinstate Miss Ackroyd, was issued yesterday. It is now up to the trust to respond.
Miss Ackroyd is still the subject of disciplinary action at Walsgrave because of allegations of malpractice.
A major investigation looked at all her patients since 1995 and evidence was passed to the General Medical Council (GMC).
The body ruled that Miss Ackroyd should return to work subject to monitoring and a further assessment.
But the trust refused to let her resume duties and blocked attempts for her to work under the conditions at alternative centres.
It is believed the trust remains unhappy about various aspects of her practice, including breast reconstruction work and unaccompanied home visits to patients. …
