Saudi Arabia remains the top destination of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) resulting in the deepening cultural and economic relations between the Philippines and the Royal Kingdom, Quezon City Councilor Annie Rosa L. Susano said yesterday.
Susano, who was the guest of the Saudi embassy at the celebration of the National Day of Saudi Arabia at the Mandarin Hotel in Makati City, said the latest figures released by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration(POEA) showed, a total of 127,432 Filipino workers were working in Saudi Arabia last year alone.
She said other top destinations of OFWs last year were Hong Kong with 69,464 workers; Japan, 44,549; United Arab Emirates, 31,202; Taiwan, 29,078; Singapore, 19,224; Kuwait, 15,362; Italy, 13,474; United Kingdom, 9,840; and Brunei, 7,748.
Susano thanked the Royal Kingdom, through its Ambassador to the Philippines Saleh M. Al Ghamdi, for the deployment of thousands of Filipino workers that helped increase the foreign remittances of OFWs expected to reach $8 billion this year.
She said that as pointed out by Labor Secretary Patricia A. Sto. Tomas, higher dollar remittances helps stabilize the local currency which in the process complements the improved inflow of portfolio and direct investments.
"Many OFWs come from QC District 2 which I represent," said Susano who received the Manuel L. Quezon Bantayog Award from the Quezon City Press Club as one of the outstanding Quezon City councilors. …
