Ye Olde School Days Highland Christian Academy Goes Back to the Middle Ages

Chivalrous knights. Ladies in waiting. Jousting and tournaments.
If Elginites wanted to get a taste of the Middle Ages last week, they only needed to go as far as Highland Christian Academy, where staff and pre-kindergarten students transported the gym back to medieval times.
Preschool director Pam Backey, who coordinated the event, said every year the students participate in a pair of theme days, recreating a time period or a place at the Elgin school.
From mock sword fights and court jesters to a strolling minstrel and a courtyard, Backey worked hard to make this year's medieval theme as believable as possible.
"I did a lot of research," she said. "I wanted to have something that was authentic."
To motivate students and get them into character, Backey sewed costumes for each of the students, using twin-sized sheets.
The students played bocce ball and musical chairs, games played during the Middle Ages. …
