Open Studios and Classes for Adults. (Dancing Las Vegas)

Ari, Daniel, Dance Magazine

The University of Nevada--Las Vegas is just a few miles from the Las Vegas Strip of hotels and casinos. Each semester, UNLV offers varied dance classes to enrolled students and file Las Vegas community, according to Louis Kavouras, the chair of the dance department. Admitted students get preferential enrollment, and some classes are closed to non-admitted students. Nonresidents pay out-of-state fees. Classes run the gamut from ballet to flamenco, from technique to history.

Backstage Dance Studio and Fern Adair Conservatory of the Arts offer open classes and also rent studio space for rehearsals and auditions. Each is a large facility with good opportunities to network.

Because so many entertainers live in or pass through Las Vegas, it's possible to study with master teachers. Tap legend Henry LeTang, for example, mentored many dancers, including Gregory Hines, and choreographed films and Broadway shows including Tap, The Cotton Club, and Sophisticated Ladies. Now an elder, he lives in Las Vegas and coaches tap dancers out of his home.
