Pitt Women Race Past California (Pa.)

Marcedes Walker and Shavonte Zellous each scored 23 points, as the Pitt women's basketball team opened its season with a 71-58 victory over NCAA Division II California (Pa.) on Wednesday at Petersen Events Center.
Walker, a preseason All-Big East Conference selection, recorded team highs with eight rebounds, two blocks and three steals. Zellous also had eight rebounds and five assists for the Lady Panthers (1- 0).
Lindsay Johnson led all California (Pa.) scorers with 18 points. Butler graduate Kim Nowakowski had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Vulcans (0-1).
LeMoyne 60, Mercyhurst 48
Kim Wagoner had 16 points for LeMoyne (1-0) in a season-opening victory over visiting Mercyhurst (0-1). Lindsay Carr added 13 points but committed a game-high nine turnovers. Rachel Divosevic, a North Allegheny graduate, led all scorers with 20 points for Mercyhurst.
Shippensburg 69, Millersville 67
Khalil Abdus-Salaam's layup in the final four seconds of play lifted host Shippensburg (1-3) over Millersville (0-1) in nonconference play. Chuck Davis had team highs with 24 points and five assists for Shippensburg. Charlie Parker led all scorers with 27 points in a losing effort.
