As a Boy Scout leader, Bob Rentschler understood the influence that Scouting had on young men like his son.
And as a Shriner, Mr. Rentschler valued the commitment that members made in supporting Shrine hospitals for children throughout the United States.
Robert D. Rentschler, of Pleasant Hills, a retired advertising director for the former G.C. Murphy Co., died on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, in the Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Jefferson Hills. He was 88.
"As both a high school and college student, my father played varsity football, basketball and baseball," said his daughter, Cheryl Harry, a teacher in the Western Jefferson Hills School District.
"Those were Depression years," she added. "And with the help of athletic scholarships and by washing dishes in the women's dormitory cafeteria at Kent State University (Kent, Ohio), Dad was able to receive his degree."
In 1939, Mr. Rentschler married Ruth Brosius, a family friend who grew up in Dauphin County. …
