County Encourages Minority-Owned Businesses

Minority and women contractors said Tuesday they are encouraged about Allegheny County's efforts to increase their share of business with county departments and authorities.
But several of the 70 business owners and social activists who attended a meeting with representatives of those departments arranged by County Executive Dan Onorato said they want to see follow-through and accountability to make sure those efforts yield positive results.
"We'll see what happens," said Joyce Query, owner of i-Squared, a North Side information technology consulting company, following the meeting at the Regional Enterprise Tower, Downtown.
Query and others had a chance to discuss issues of concern with Onorato and staff from the County Department of Economic Development, Sewer Authority, Airport Authority and Port Authority, and the joint county-City of Pittsburgh Sports & Exhibition Authority among others.
Onorato said he will take steps to help companies win more contracts with the county.
The county's goal is to award 13 percent to minority and 2 percent to women business owners, but different departments and agencies have varying targets, according to Onorato. …
