Hamstring Injury Sidelines Left Fielder Nyjer Morgan
Biertempfel, Rob, Tribune-Review/Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Pirates left fielder Nyjer Morgan will be out of action for at least two days after tweaking his left hamstring.
Morgan was not in the lineup Saturday against the Colorado Rockies. He hopes to be back Monday, when the Pirates begin a four- game series at Washington.
Morgan felt what he said was "a little, baby tug" in his leg as he made a running catch of Troy Tulowitzki's fly ball in the eighth inning. It's the same hamstring Morgan hurt last season when he stepped awkwardly on first base in Milwaukee.
"It's not bad," Morgan said. "I could play, but I'd rather look after it. It's a long year, and I don't want to aggravate it. I don't want to be a punk, but I have to be smart about it."
Morgan ranks second among National League leadoff hitters with a .384 on-base percentage and third with a .304 batting average.
Capps' mechanical flaw
Manager John Russell reiterated yesterday that closer Matt Capps is fully healthy and is not struggling because of any lingering elbow or shoulder pain.
"He's over-rotating a little bit," Russell said. "When he makes his turn, his shoulder's going too far toward the third-base line."
Pitching coach Joe Kerrigan spotted the defect while watching video of Capps. Russell said the problem is especially bad when Capps tries to throw inside to left-handed batters -- which is what he tried to do Friday night against Brad Hawpe, who crushed a game- winning homer.
Russell theorized that Capps' eight-week layoff last season due to shoulder pain may have altered his closer's delivery.
"When you start your rehab and get throwing again, sometimes you change your mechanics," Russell said.
Pirates trade for Hacker
Reliever Romulo Sanchez was dealt to the New York Yankees yesterday for right-hander Eric Hacker.
Hacker, 26, went 1-2 with a 6.03 ERA in six starts this season for Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He has 20 strikeouts in 311/3 innings.
Hacker was assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis. To make room for Hacker on the 40-man roster, lefty Phil Dumatrait (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. …
