Casey, Specter to Check Those Wanting to Represent W. Pa. as U.S. Attorney

Applications are being taken for U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan's job.
Sens. Bob Casey of Scranton and Arlen Specter of Philadelphia are in the process of taking applications for Buchanan's position, as well as those of her counterparts in some districts in Pennsylvania, Casey spokesman Larry Smar said Friday.
The country's 93 U.S. Attorneys serve at the discretion of the president, and most offer to resign when a new president is elected.
"It is our intention to begin receiving applications, and we're going to interview (those interested) in the position," Smar said.
Neither Specter nor Buchanan, who was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania in September 2001, could be reached for comment.
Applications also are being sought for the position held by Michael R. Stiles, interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and Martin C. Carlson, U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Stiles is the third person to hold the job in Eastern Pennsylvania since last year.
