Commentary: Subject to Change: The Rite to Publish
McCune-Elmore, Louisa, THE JOURNAL RECORD
The great equalizer in publishing today is created with nothing more than a laptop and an Internet connection. But like any publishing venture, you have to be good to be recognized. Here in Oklahoma, beyond page hits and sponsorship dollars, we have a third way of discerning blog quality - the Okie Blog Awards, now in their fifth year. Last week, I served on a small panel to help establish the final winners (the initial round of judging was done by a vote among peers).
Once in a Lifetime: The Pioneer Woman
If you happened to be watching the Fox & Friends morning show on Wednesday, then you are now one of the many millions of people already hip to this Oklahoma treasure. Ree Drummond writes and photographs about her family's life as home-schoolers, ranchers, and gourmands on the Pioneer Woman blog. Her first book, The Pioneer Woman Cooks (2009), shot to the top of the New York Times best- seller list. Drummond's blog has inspired hundreds of knockoffs, but hers is the bona-fide original, whipping snappy writing, good design, and plum photography into a perfect online stew. Drummond has stamped a first-rate brand on the art of ranch living. thepioneerwoman.com.
Wine, Women, and Song: The Art of Manliness
Take a stack of Esquire magazines, a pair of Oklahoma state seal cufflinks, Freeman's Sporting Club on the Lower East Side, an Oxford suit, a remote control, one day's worth of stubble, a new copy of The Dangerous Book for Boys, and tattered copies of Dressing the Man, and you'll have a perfect antidote to the Pioneer Woman. The Art of Manliness, named Best Overall Blog, is a rich trove of advice on how to revive the lost art of being a sophisticated man. Brett and Kate McKay of Tulsa are the blog creators; for all of its well- done content, the site is equally notable for its design by Eric Granata. artofmanliness.com
