The public is invited to attend several events designed to celebrate the accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday and Tuesday.
Programs are planned at Penn State Fayette, Waynesburg University and St. Vincent College.
At the Fayette campus, the events will be in the Maggie Hardy Magerko Auditorium in the campus' Community Center. Beginning at 10:30 a.m., dozens of Fayette County's African-American middle and high school students will be recognized for achievements in academic scholarship, community service, athletics and performing arts.
"King's Dream" is a live ensemble performance and multimedia presentation that pays tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.
On the actual Martin Luther King Day holiday -- Monday -- Penn State Fayette students (who have a day off from classes) will gather to have a "Day On" to perform with fellow students from the Penn State Beaver, Dubois, Greater Allegheny, New Kensington and Shenango campuses.
"A Day of Remembrance 2011" featuring video presentations, live readings, cultural singing and dancing and a talk will be featured in a day-long series of events at St. Vincent College on Monday.
Members of the Multicultural Student Coalition and the Office of Multicultural Student Life will create a "Dream Center" in the lounge of the Robert S. Carey Student Center, open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., where video excerpts from King's speeches will be shown.
Students will serve visitors a large birthday cake and offer arts- and-crafts demonstrations. …
