Yoga Clothing Strikes a Pose

Practicing yoga is about finding inner peace.
But some of us are equally concerned with finding outer piece(s).
It's not just vanity; the right apparel allows you to do the moves and hold poses correctly.
"Yoga clothes need to be supportive, but also breathable," says Kristin McGee, yoga expert for Fila, a sportswear manufacturer. "If something is too tight, it will constrict the breath -- and in yoga practice, you always need to support your chest, hips and thighs.
"Comfortable waistbands that have a little bit of give but still hold you in, and tops that allow us to stretch and move with ease and grace, yet support our breasts and stomach, are perfect for yoga practice. Think of your favorite swimsuit -- it supports you and doesn't feel too revealing or uncomfortable, and it still allows you to have fun and participate in all your swimming or beach activities."
It's important to try on yoga clothes to check the fit and comfort, says McGee, who recommends fabrics that are soft and comfortable, yet stylish and supportive.
"You can never go wrong with a great classic black yoga bootleg or straight leg pant," she says. "When shopping for tops, look for colors that you like, and mix and match a few vibrant tops with your classic pants, and you will be good to go."
Yoga has grown in popularity for men and women, says Dominique Ponko, owner of Yoga Flow, with locations in Murrysville, Aspinwall, the South Hills and Shadyside.
"Yoga is so hot right now," Ponko says. "I think people are doing a lot of soul-searching, and yoga helps them find what they are looking for. We live in such a chaotic society, where we run ourselves into the ground, that it is nice to get away from it all and relax, and yoga helps you do just that, and more.
"Having the right clothing and other equipment is so important," she says.
Women need to be comfortable in their clothing so they can focus on their practice and not what they are wearing, says Meredith Ward, showroom manager of lululemon athletica in Shadyside. Clothes that have four-way stretch, allow for free range of movement and are moisture-wicking are ideal. The designers at lululemon athletica create pieces that are fashionable and high-performance, and fit most body types, including taller women.
The color of the clothing you choose is an individual choice, Ward says. There are plenty of options to choose from in the lululemon line. …
