Decision May Be Made Today on Health Department Leader Dixon's Fate

The decision by Allegheny County Council on Tuesday to approve four appointments to the health board could set the stage for replacing Dr. Bruce Dixon as director of the county health department at today's board meeting.
Council unanimously approved a request by County Executive Rich Fitzgerald that Dr. Donald Burke, Joan Cleary and William B. Youngblood be reappointed and that Dr. Edith Shapira be added to the nine-member board.
At Fitzgerald's request, council held off on voting on the appointment of another new member, Dr. Kotayya E. Kondaveeti. A reason was not provided for the delay.
The health board will meet at 12:30 p.m. in the Clack Health Center in Lawrenceville.
Fitzgerald is responsible for appointing members to the health board, which has the task of naming the health director.
Dixon, who has been the health director for nearly 20 years, said health board members have held closed-door discussions about his contract and that he believes Fitzgerald wants him to either resign or face termination. …
