THREE DISTINCT impressions of a famous 19th-century Viennese composer emerged Monday night when the music faculty of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville performed its season-opening Coffee Concert.

Faculty members presented a delightful program devoted entirely to chamber music by Franz Schubert (1797-1828).

Mary Anderson and Linda Perry opened the concert with a performance of the Fantasy in F Minor for Piano Four Hands, a work that Schubert composed in the late 1820s, not long after Beethoven's death - a time when Schubert was the reigning creative force of the Viennese Classical School.

The temperament of this music, which has to do with its complex harmonic shading and its assertive shifts in tempo, might easily be mistaken for that of Chopin, who was a teen-ager at the time Schubert composed it.

Demonstrating a nearly seamless rapport at the keyboard, Anderson and Perry performed with a firm grasp of that temperamental quality. Further, they confidently probed the emotional subtleties of the charming folk tunes that Schubert wove into his F minor Fantasy, admirably realizing this composer's special magic.

Soprano Sarah Turner and clarinetist George Mellott joined Perry in a performance of the seldom-heard Schubert song "The Shepherd on the Rock."
