Benefit for United Services for Handicapped
Runners and walkers can benefit United Services for the Handicapped by participating in a 5-kilometer run or a 1-mile family walk at 7:30 a.m. Sunday in St. Peters.
The course begins at Sutters Mill and Jungerman Roads, about a mile south of the Interstate 70-Cave Springs interchange.
Kelly and Jeff Pfitzer of Harvester organized the run as a tribute to their 14-month-old daughter Haley. The toddler has anoxia encephalopathy. The condition caused brain damage and blindness. Haley and her family are clients of United Services.
United Services provides developmental therapy for preschoolers and child care services to children who are physically or mentally disabled or developmentally delayed.
Proceeds from the run will be used to buy special playground equipment for United Services.
"We wanted to take a very heartbreaking situation for us and turn it into something really good for others," Kelly Pfitzer said in a statement announcing the run.
"If Haley can be the spark behind an event which can help other children with major challenges, we feel that she has a special purpose in life. …
