Berkeley Trio in Ozark Meet at Kirkwood

Boone, Kevin E., St Louis Post-Dispatch (MO)

Many of the area's top runners and jumpers will compete Saturday and Sunday in the USA Track and Field-Ozark Association Championships at Kirkwood High.

The meet, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, is a qualifier for the USA regional that covers four states. That meet is July 7-9 at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Among those competing will be Berkeley's standout threesome of Lavar Miller, David Wilson and Terrell Brown. Miller swept the high jump, long jump and triple jump last month in leading Berkeley to its 10th Missouri Class 3A championship, including three in a row.

The national championships for USA Track and Field will be in San Jose, Calif., in July.

Other top runners competing this weekend: D'Anthony Smotherman, Lutheran North; Tiffaney Williams, Mimi Manuel and Carlos McLaurin, Hazelwood East; Raven Rogers, University City; Javon Dixon, Kirkwood; Robert Peete, Sumner; Drago Smith, Normandy; Rodney Session, East St. Louis; Angela Gilliam and Kanesha Williams, Lincoln; Catherine and Anna Wright of Oakville.

Hughes, a 6-foot-5 guard, will be a junior next fall.

Big things are expected of two CBC frontliners - 6-6 Justin Tatum, a Cardinal Ritter transfer who has played well in AAU competition; and 6-8 Matt Wienstroer, who has been invited to an all-star camp in Kansas City.

Tatum, who is a cousin of ex-NBA star Jo Jo White, is drawing rave reviews for the Eagles' 16-and-under team.

CBC wasn't selected for the Coca-Cola/KMOX Shootout, despite the presence of Hughes and Tatum. …
