Officials of St. Charles County Community College hope to assist GTE Telephone Operations expand training programs tailored for GTE employees in Wentzville.

While the college has worked with several businesses in the county on offering personalized programs or assistance with programs, GTE's proposal is the largest customized program the college has helped to guide, officials say.

College trustees heard about the plan at a board meeting Tuesday. The proposal seeks money from the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Customized Training Program to allow GTE officials to expand training in such areas as company relations and contracts, problem solving, root cause determination, project management skills and other areas, including computer hardware and software for telecommunications.

The college will serve as an administrator of the program and will contribute no money to the endeavor, says Rose Brooks, the college business and industry coordinator. The cost of the project is estimated at $1,025,000, and the state will contribute about $718,000.

GTE has developed all the programs proposed for the estimated 1,000 employees, says Dick Shoemaker, manager of external communications with GTE. This summer, the company begin hiring people as operators and and as employees of the customer relations and sales offices. When hiring is complete, about 475 people might have been added to the work force in Wentzville, he said. …
