Highmark Inc.'s Allegheny Health Network has formed a joint venture with an Ohio company to run emergency departments in eight hospitals in Western Pennsylvania.
The health insurer's hospital system is stepping up competition with its much larger rival, UPMC, which formed a subsidiary 17 years ago to provide emergency room staffing and management to medical centers across the Pittsburgh region.
Allegheny Health Network Emergency Medicine Management LLC, which opened as a for-profit company on Tuesday, is managing emergency departments at six of the seven Allegheny Health Network hospitals, plus two independent hospitals, one of which used to pay UPMC for the service.
It is headed by Bruce MacLeod, who runs West Penn Hospital's emergency department and is a former UPMC emergency physician.
Allegheny Health Network partnered with Emergency Medicine Physicians of Canton in the 50-50 joint venture. Emergency Medicine Physicians, which serves 60 hospitals across the country, previously provided management to Allegheny Health Network's Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights and Allegheny Valley Outpatient Center in New Kensington.
The joint venture adds the network's Allegheny General Hospital in North Side, West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield, Canonsburg Hospital and Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie. …
