Bring Back Kong! ; Mayoral Candidate Leads Election Campaign with Promise to Return Giant Ape to the City Centre
Griffin, Jon, Birmingham Evening Mail (England)
KING Kong could be on his way back to Birmingham next month - if the city's very own John Bull has his way.
Former policeman Ray Egan is launching his bid to become Birmingham's first elected mayor with a manifesto pledge to return the giant ape to his spiritual home.
He has arranged a meeting with the current owners of King Kong, market trader firm Spook Erection Ltd, next month when he hopes to get the all-clear.
The fibreglass ape is currently lying discarded in a Penrith car park next to Spook's headquarters - but Ray has announced the return of the 20ft fibreglass statue as the main plank of his mayoral manifesto.
The John Bull campaigner will meet Lesley Maby, widow of the markets firm's founder Nigel Maby, on Easter Bank Holiday Monday to plead for Kong's return.
"King Kong was a great sight in Birmingham for years and the city has not been the same since he left. He belongs in Brum, not flat on his back Determined: Ray in a car park in Penrith. I have arranged a meeting with Mrs Maby at Beeston market in Nottingham on April 9 when I hope she will agree to let him come back to Birmingham," Ray said. …
