SARASOTA: Commissioners reject the idea of reappointing him

Cold water was thrown Tuesday on the idea of Shannon Snyder's reappointment to his City Commission seat.

City Commissioner Paul Caragiulo, who beat Snyder in August's primary election for a Sarasota County Commission seat, had proposed that Snyder be reappointed to finish his city term in May. But that would require a majority vote from the remaining commissioners, who made it clear that they found the suggestion distasteful.

"It would fly in the face of the people we were elected to represent," said Mayor Willie Shaw. Commissioners Susan Chapman and Suzanne Atwell similarly rejected the idea, calling it "stunning," and "an embarrassment."

State law requires both Snyder and Caragiulo to step down from the City Commission by Nov. 18, after they entered the race for the Sarasota County Commission's District 2 seat. Caragiulo's primary win propelled him into a November general election that he is favored to win.

Caragiulo had suggested that Snyder be reappointed to finish his term, saying it would be a move in favor of good management, and easier for the remaining commissioners to select one replacement rather than two.

Snyder said Tuesday that he would have been happy to finish his term in May, but recognized that there was little chance of it happening.

"I can count," Snyder said. "And there's not three votes here for that."

With both Snyder and Caragiulo leaving the board, the remaining three city commissioners are required to select two candidates to fill those seats. A few residents turned in applications on Tuesday, including Vald Svekis, a member of the city's planning board, and Ken Shelin, a former city commissioner, for District 2. Stan Zimmerman, who worked as a city editor for the Sarasota News Leader, applied for District 3.

Other candidates have been discussed, but not all have confirmed their intentions to apply. Among them are Paul Thorpe, of the Downtown Sarasota Alliance; Cathy Antunes, vice president of the Sarasota County Council of Neighborhood Associations; Eileen Normile, a member of the city's Independent Police Advisory Board; local environmentalist Jono Miller; as well as residents Candy Spaulding, Rick Farmer, Bob Easterle and Matt Woodall. …
