AMAZING details of a huge 10-year revamp of Manchester Airport have been revealed.

Images of how a new 'Super Terminal' check-in could look after a Pounds 1bn transformation are included in formal plans placed with Manchester council by Manchester Airports Group.

Said to be the biggest single construction project ever to take place in Greater Manchester, it will more than double the size of Terminal Two, adding 886,892 sq ft and linking it to Terminal Three.

There is also confirmation in the plans of an intention to demolish Terminal One.

And 2,553 new car parking spaces would be created.

The proposals were unveiled as ministers last night delayed a decision over whether to expand Heathrow - bolstering the case for more regional capacity. Mike Kane, MP for Wythenshawe, said: "Although Manchester is a world-class gateway, we all know the fabric of the terminals has become quite run down over the last few years and is not fit for purpose - so this is great news for Wythenshawe, Manchester and the whole northern region."

The airport has pledged to power the entire site with renewable energy - some bought from outside - but with a plan to look into using solar power.

The design will make use of natural light and minimise the need for cooling in the summer and heating in winter.

A new access ramp from the M56 Spur would be built giving direct access to the new departures forecourt which will be on the existing car park roof. …
