With no buyer for two daily newspapers in the Mon Valley, Trib Total Media will close the operations Dec. 31, the company announced Wednesday.

The decision to cease publishing The Daily News in McKeesport and The Valley Independent in Monessen comes amid growing financial pressure in the newspaper industry from declining advertising revenue, which has caused some U.S. papers to close and many more to downsize, cut production and consolidate operations.

Trib Total Media tried to sell the newspapers as part of a strategic growth plan but could not find a buyer, CEO Jennifer Bertetto said.

"We have been in talks with interested buyers for these papers since August, but nothing ever came to fruition," Bertetto said. "Unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to close these papers in order to improve the financial health of the company."

The closures will result in 87 layoffs -- 51 from The Daily News and 36 from The Valley Independent.

The Valley Independent began publishing in 1902. Trib Total Media acquired the paper in 1997 along with three other daily newspapers - - the Valley News Dispatch, Leader Times and Daily Courier.

"It's a tremendous loss for the Mon Valley in general. It's a sad day for us," said state Sen. Jim Brewster, 67, a Democrat and former mayor of McKeesport who said he delivered the Daily News as a child.

Charleroi Mayor Mark Alterici said The Valley Independent "has been a huge asset to the area. ... I hope someone steps forward and brings it back."

"Even though things have gone social media, there are still a lot of people who depend on the newspaper for their general information," he said.

The Daily News opened in 1884. Trib Total Media purchased the newspaper in 2007 along with The Laurel Group, six weekly newspapers in Westmoreland and Fayette counties.

Trib Total Media recently sold the Leader Times in Kittanning, The Daily Courier in Connellsville, The Laurel Group papers and The Dispatch in Blairsville to West Penn Media Inc. …
