BELIEVE it or not, Ed Woodward is lucky. Yep, you read that right.

He's lucky because, even though he's facing a stack of problems and a wave of new criticism after United's defeat to FC Midtjylland, there's a solution staring him in the face.

The crisis engulfing Old Trafford would be worse if there was nowhere to turn. But, fortunately for him, there is - Jose Mourinho.

It's dumb luck that one of the most successful active managers is available at a time when United are at their lowest point in two decades. They missed out in 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement and appointed David Moyes.

That probably should have been the end of it. But who could have predicted Mourinho would be sacked by Chelsea less than six months after winning the title in May? It's handed United and Woodward a second chance. And they can't afford to pass it up this time.

The fans' confidence in Woodward's ability to run the football side of the club is at rock-bottom.

He won't be able to win them back overnight. But he can take a step in the right direction by giving Mourinho the job.

He won't be everyone's ideal candidate. Some will point to his sometimes guarded style of football or his almost non-existent record of promoting players from the academy.

Some won't like the baggage he comes with - the poking, the prodding, the antagonising. But he's a winner. He's won everywhere he's been. Portugal, England, Italy, Spain. In European competition and at home. And it feels a long time since United were considered winners. …
