SARASOTA COUNTY

One person has died in Sarasota County after eating shellfish contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio vulnificus, Florida Department of Health officials confirmed Thursday.

Citing patient privacy concerns, the department declined to release details about the patient or the date of death. The death likely occurred before Aug. 12, the last time the department updated its public list of deaths linked to the bacterial infection.

So far this year, five people in Florida have died from infections and 21 cases have been reported. In 2015 and 2014, Sarasota County recorded one death each year from the bacterium. Manatee County has not had any deaths from the bacterium in the last three years, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Most people become infected by consuming raw or undercooked seafood, specifically oysters, or exposing a wound to seawater, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most infections occur from May through October when water temperatures are warmer. …
