AREA ROUNDUP ; Holgorsen Named AFCA Region Coach of the Year

The American Football Coaches Association on Tuesday named West Virginia University football coach Dana Holgorsen its District 4 Regional Coach of the Year, which makes him a finalist for AFCA National Coach of the Year. Other FBS coaches named as regional coaches of the year are Navy's Ken Niumatalolo (District 1), Alabama's Nick Saban (District 2), Western Michigan's P.J. Fleck (District 3) and Colorado's Mike MacIntyre (District 5). The winners were selected by active members of the Association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions.

Holgorsen guided the Mountaineers to a 10-2 mark this season, their best since joining the Big 12 in 2012.

WVU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Off to its best start since the 2010-11 season, the WVU women's basketball team moved up three spots to No. 14 in the USA Today Sports Coaches Poll on Tuesday. The Mountaineers (9-0) also are ranked No. 13 in the Associated Press Poll this week.

They picked up wins over Morehead State and Ole Miss in the SEC/ Big 12 Challenge in the last week and face University of South Caroline Upstate Saturday in Morgantown.

WVU SOCCER: The WVU women's soccer team finished the season No. 2 in both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and TopDrawerSoccer.com top 25 polls.

WVU (23-2-2, 8-0) lost in the national championship game against USC, which finished No. 1 in both polls. Georgetown, the only other team to beat WVU, finished No. 3. North Carolina, which WVU topped in the seminfinals, finished No. 4 both polls.

* WVU men's soccer player Jack Elliott has been named to the All- Great Lakes Region first team by the NSCAA.

Elliott, a senior defender, scored two goals and added an assist while anchoring a back line that recorded record-setting numbers. Elliott and the Mountaineers posted eight shutouts in 2016, including a shutout streak that lasted a program-record seven consecutive matches and 758 minutes.
