League for Blind to Expand Facilities with $363,000 Grant
May, Bill, THE JOURNAL RECORD
A $363,000 grant will allow the Oklahoma League for the Blind to expand its facilities in Oklahoma City and hire more blind persons, according to LeRoy Saunders, executive director.
The league, which is housed in a former brewery, employs blind persons to manufacture rubber and wooden products for local industry and the federal government, he said.
Saunders said the grant will help pay for a $507,000 remodeling and rennovation of the workshop to add 10,000 square feet.
"We hope to be able to put more people to work with this extra money," he noted. "Now that we have the money, we can advertise for bids and let contracts in about 60 days. Work probably will begin in April."
After rennovation, the league will try to add new products to its line, but Saunders said he is unsure of what type of products.
"We are looking at some innovations in telemarketing and possibly some computers with features which allow blind persons to use them," he said. …
