Center to Provide Free Cancer Prevention Screenings
- Dr. Emily McLean has opened a new office in Edmond for child, adolescent and adult psychiatry on April 10 in the Edmond Memorial Medical Offices. McLean had been practicing at Willow View Hospital and the Deaconess Senior Diagnostic Center. She conducts Adults Molested As Children groups at Northcare Community Mental Health Center and is involved in research of `compliance with recommendations made at discharge' in the diagnostic and short-term unit at Children's Hospital. McLean is joined by Sherry Cowden, M.S.W., in the new office. . .
- Dr. Edward Brandt, new dean of the OU College of Medicine, will be keynote speaker at the April 20 Graduate Education and Research Day at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City. The annual event began in 1979 to highlight research efforts within graduate programs on the Health Sciences Center campus. A display of research posters by graduate students, faculty and postdoctoral fellows represent all colleges, including allied health, public health, dentistry, nursing, medicine and pharmaceutical sciences. . .
- The College of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center will receive a $35,910 grant from The Kerr Foundation Inc. of Oklahoma City. The grant, which will be issued in July, will support the work of Tina Hough, coordinator of the Emerson Teen Parent Program which was established in 1986 through the Gannett Foundation Community Priorities Grant Program.
The annual budget of the program is about $200,000, part of which is supplied by the OU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Oklahoma City Public School System and community donations.
The Emerson Teen Parent Program focuses on early prenatal and postnatal care for students, promoting nutritionally healthy mothers and babies, and fostering of healthy parenting skills to prevent child abuse and neglect. - Larry Moore, 10-year cancer survivor and author of "A Guide for Cancer Patients," will speak at the Celebration of Life at 2 p.m. April 30 at Baptist Hospital. This is the second year the Cancer Center of the Southwest at Baptist Hospital has hosted the event for National Cancer Survivor's Day. The events will feature a gallery of artists who are cancer survivors, musical entertainment and refreshments. Everyone, particularly cancer survivors, are invited to attend the free celebration. …
