Making key contacts with foreign business leaders during an unstable time is an important part of stabilizing economic conditions in the Soviet Union, according to one of that country's leaders now in Oklahoma City.

Such contacts also will be good for Oklahoma business leaders who want to do business in the Soviet Union or any of its republics, said Nickolai V. Sedash, deputy general director of AviaCentre, the Soviet's aviation ministry trading arm.

Sedash is one of about two dozen senior Soviet aviation executives taking accelerated business courses at Oklahoma City University. While here for the four-week school, the Soviet delegation also will talk trade with local business leaders, trying to establish trading partners and possibly joint ventures.

"There is some reluctance on the part of American businessmen to do business in the Soviet Union because of our unstable economic conditions," Sedash said. "That's understandable. There are some Soviet businessmen who also are reluctant.

"What we have to do is work now to establish the important international business contacts so that when our conditions are somewhat less unstable, then we will be able to enter some contractual arrangements we have discussed and maybe even some joint ventures." Such international cooperation was foremost in the minds of the Soviet students as they were introduced to executives of 15 Oklahoma companies seeking more international trade. They were part of a trade show and mini-seminar sponsored by OCU's International Trade Council.

Sedash is one of about 10 Soviet aviation leaders who are back for a second course at OCU since the program began in late 1989. Six groups of about 20 students each have completed the school.

Each time, the students spent part of the day in class and another part of the day touring Oklahoma, learning about the United States and Oklahoma and the American marketing system, seeing classroom lectures put to work in the market place.

They also toured local aviation companies, learning management and business techniques as well as talking trade. …
