Edwards Cleared of Wrongdoing
Rep. Mickey Edwards said Wednesday he has received a letter from a federal investigator clearing him of any wrongdoing involving the now defunct House Bank. Edwards, R-Okla., was named one of the worst offenders at the bank with 386 overdrafts.
The congressman said he received a letter last week from Malcolm R. Wilkey, a Justice Department special counsel, "stating that he had found nothing at all in my bank records to suggest any wrongdoing whatsoever." Four other Oklahoma congressman reported earlier that they had received letters clearing them. They were Democratic Reps. Mike Synar, Glenn English, Bill Brewster and Dave McCurdy. Rep. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., did not have an account at the House bank. Wilkey reported "possible criminal conduct" by a few past and present lawmakers on Wednesday. The Justice Department immediately established a special prosecution unit to conduct a full investigation. He did not name those facing further investigation. Company Formed to Insure AMEX Firms
