OU Continuing Education College Hosts Workshop on Civil Right


Managers and supervisors can learn ways to prevent costly Equal Employment Opportunity violations and promote awareness of civil rights laws by attending a workshop offered by the University of Oklahoma College of Continuing Education.

"EEO Training for Managers and Supervisors" will be offered on two dates _ Feb. 27-March 1 and April 17-19 at the Oklahoma Center for Continuing Education on the OU Norman campus.

"There are four key reasons why an understanding of Equal Employment Opportunity is essential to the success of supervisors and organizations," said Bill Southwell, program director for the Center for Business and Management in the OU College of Continuing Education.

"First," he said, "it's the right thing to do.

"And, it makes good business sense," he said. "Can your company afford to pay $50,000 to $100,000 in civil penalties or $50,000 to $300,000 in compensatory and punitive damages? Do you want the adverse publicity that comes with being sued by the government, an applicant or a current or ex-employee?

"Everyone needs this vital information," Southwell said. "Your lowest-level supervisor or manager can commit the company to the same legal liability as the owner or CEO in EEO matters."

Southwell said diversity is here to stay.

"With the workforce becoming more diversified every day and with the laws becoming increasingly complex, every company must demonstrate a strong commitment to EEO compliance," he said. "To do this, you must have an ongoing training program to keep your supervisors and managers up to date. …
