KRI Venture to Serve Japanese Market

Knight-Ridder Information, Inc., Kinokuniya Company Limited, and Maruzen Company Limited have announced an agreement to create a joint venture company that will be the exclusive Japanese distributor of Knight-Ridder Information's products and services. The company, which will be based in Tokyo with a branch in Osaka, will begin operations in January with employees on loan from the three parties, plus additional staff to be hired. The chief executive officer of the new company will be Kunizo Hirai, currently the general manager of the Information Services division of Maruzen.

The agreement, which was signed in Tokyo by the chief executives of the three companies, creates a single unified entity to serve the rapidly growing Japanese market. It was announced to customers at Knight-Ridder Information's annual Tokyo UPDATE users' conference. For the past 18 years, Kinokuniya and Maruzen have been independent, non-exclusive distributors of DIALOG and related products and services.
